Hello Zesties,

Welcome to Week 2 of Inspired by Art: a 4-week course in ekphrastic poetry.

If you’re new to ekphrasis, check out my post What is Ekphrastic Poetry?

How the course works:

Every Tuesday in April a set of prompts/exercises will be delivered to your inbox to get your artsy juices flowing onto the page. The basic prompts will be available for everyone, but if you want to go deep, there will be more context below the paywall. Paid subscribers will also get an extra task that builds as the course progresses.

Week 1: Immersion
Week 2: Colour & Imagery
Week 3: Words as Art
Week 4: Beyond Ekphrasis
Week 5: Open Mic & Art Show [Add to Calendar]
Week 2: Colour & Imagery

Today, we will look at the artist’s obsession with the colour blue and explore poetry as a visual art.

Blue Tasks

  • List all the words you can think of to describe the colour blue. Think of all the different shades of blue and all the emotions associated with them. See how far you can stretch it.

  • Write a blue poem. What objects, scenarios, people and places can you turn blue?

  • Do you have a different colour obsession? Try these tasks with your favourite colour.

Imagery Tasks

  • See how H.D. takes an image of the sea and the image of pine forest and fuses them together in their poem Oread. Can you find two opposing images and create a metaphor that combines them both? Write a poem with less than 50 words.

  • Keep going: see what weird and wonderful images you can combine.
